I am a .net programmer and this is the first time that I have ever looked at DNN. In my company there is a DNN application that I need to look at  and write database reports. Due to that fact, I have the following questions:

1. Can you tell me what tool I can use to open the DNN files and/or a reference on how to use this tool?

2. How can I find the database connections that the DNN application uses?

Hello,

Well, a lot of this depends on how you plan to create reports or what your goals are. DNN just uses a SQL Server backend. So, for many reporting services, you can skip DNN directly and just write reports that run outside of DNN directly against the DB.

If you want to integrate your reports into DNN, that can be done many different ways. You could write a custom module to host some reporting components - like Telerik Reporting - and then create your reports normally that way. There are some existing modules that already do that, with varying degrees of customization. If you just want to display simple data, you can use any number of modules (like the DNN Reports open source one) that just do templated displays of data from some SQL query.

1. DNN files are usually HTML files with code injected or code behind files, all besides .dll files might be opened using a text Editor
2. Database Connection is stored in web.config file in root folder of the IIS website
