Our question is about the commercial and licensing of software. I'm are starting to sell modules in snowcovered and found that many sell modules in different versions

- Standard - One parent portal or one child portal.
- Developer - One parent portal with unlimited child portals.
- Enterprise Edition - Unlimited parent portals and unlimited child portals.
- Source Code - The module with the source code included.

I would like to know if there are ways to control the use of the modules according to their license through DotNetNuke or is only a matter of licensing and honesty.

We implemented a web based key distribution management system to handle this. It's not an insignificant overhead to implement and manage so it really depends on the module, it's value and market size. In terms of the problems you face without (or even with) key management, At one level you will have people who are generally honest and will purchase one license and then reuse outside the terms of the license, and then at another you will have those who will blatently copy, resell and generally have no regard to your IP. Chasing that down globally might not be your best day, especially if there are significant sums involved.

be aware, that any licensing puts an extra function into your software and service on top, you need to take care of - you should weight carefully, whether it is needed, based on the module price and estimated user base.

Thanks to both of you for your advice. We discard the systems based on your recommendations and we are planning to do a licensing system that request for a key in the first edition of the module. Who knows? Maybe this will be another module to sell.

If someone finds this topic in a while and is curious about the results, send me a message to see the results.
