I would like to know the absolute minimum files required to create a custom module. I've got an external API that I'm connecting to which handles the Business and Database layers. I just want to create the Presentation layer, and be able to upload/install it to DNN. Because it uses an external API, I don't even need to set up separate Edit or Settings pages - just View.

All the tutorials I've come across go into great detail about all the setup for custom data layers, controller classes, etc, and I don't need all that (at least I don't think so) since I will not be modifying the DNN database or accessing my data through the DNN framework.

You technically only need one. You could create a single ascx file, stick a runat server script tag in the markup to access your external api via the httpwebrequest c#/vb.net class. Drop this file in a folder in the desktopmodules folder and register it with dotnetnuke as a module via host -> module definitions -> create module. Select your file, give it a name, create module and voila!
