Hello..
We currently have a webpage (written in VB.NET using DAL and BLL) and it's used for searching an existing database, showing the the results in a gridview and then the end users click a link to open further information.

We have an iFrame in DNN which is pointing to this website for the search capabilities.  I'd like to make this into a DNN module but the external database must be searched for the return of information.

What would be the easiest way and best practices way to accomplish this?

Thanks.. -Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I think a lot of this depends on where the database is and how secure you want the connections to be...

For example, if your external db is on the same server as your DNN install, then you can add your external DB as an alternative connection string and use it normally. If your DB is external, you can still do that, but, you need to expose access to your DB a little bit more than many people are comfortable doing. Depending on the nature of the data, this may or may not be OK.

If the DB is on an external server, and you can't/don't want to connect to it directly, you can expose the data using a web service on that server. Here, you would replace your grid view on that site with a series of web services. Then, you'd create a DNN module that interacts with those services.

Hope this helps,

Mike

I hate to hijack this, but since there wasn't a reply, I guess it's safe. I also have a second database hosted on the same godaddy service and need to generate a table of the data on that non-dnn database.  IT's a media library.  I'm not a programmer, but would like the nuts and bolts to how to get the database data to be displayed as I already have the SQL query strings, and I've already added the connection string to the web.config file.

Instead of creating a new module, etc., we ended up going with XMod Pro.  It works quite well and have configured a number of our pages to use look-ups, stored procedures, etc. from external databases and the results displayed on the page.
