I am going to try something for the firsrt time, i am not sure if anyone else has done this, if you have please share you cents and pennies.

I am going to migrate the current installation of DNN 4.0.2 to 5.1.2 (which I have already done successfully)
Because I am going to migrate to a cheaper server, I will be downgrading the SQL server from standard to to Express edition.

I will:
1. Backup the .BAK files on the old server, import the backup in the new server
2. Change the connection string to as suggested by some Dotnetnuke gurus

Apart from this do i need to be worried about anything else? Would any features stop working? Will there be any other issues that I need to prepare upfront? Do i need to test any modules after the migration apart from my idiot proof ways of testing things.

Any help before i commit suicide is really appreciated.

Peace!

ok!

In my two days of attempt everything sort of fell in place.

I managed to get the data files migrated and am using a SQL Server express 2008 now. Had a few connection string problems but everything seems ok now.

However, I have a problem! All my images are not displaying, the ones in the skin and the ones in the text/html modules. Please dont ask me to copy (Portals/0 or Portals/1) folders to wwwwroot coz i have quite a few installations and each installation has a few sites.

Any help is really appreciated.

migrating from SQL Server 2005/2008 should work without issues, if both are configured identically, there shouldn't be even a need to modify the connection string (you don't need to use the database.mdf like connection string, if using Express, I always prefer attached databases, because I can easily access database using SSMS Express the same time.

Images should properly display, if domain relative path hasn't changed (i.e. prior and past DNN is installed either  in root or in a virtual directory).
