I am trying to play an mp4 file in the new media module .  I have added mp4 to my allwable file extensions , see below, but when I refresh the page I get a big Quicktime Q with a question mark (?) in)he middle of it.  What am I doing wrong?  Is it an encoding issue????  I have tried several mp4 files with the same result.

swf,jpg,jpeg,jpe,gif,bmp,png,doc,docx,xls,xlsx,ppt,pptx,pdf,txt,xml,xsl,xsd,css,zip,template,htmtemplate,ico,avi,mpg,mpeg,mp3,wmv,mov,wav,mp4

Thanks

Surely someone has an idea why an mp4 file won't play in the media module?  I have created several files and have used several from other people and have the same result every time.  They play in Quicktime and WMP on my local machine but not within DNN.  This is the page I am trying to get this to work on  http://www.csa-marion.com/News/VideoT...  Surely someone knows what I am doing wrong?????

Thanks,  John

Hello,

The problem is that MP4 files don't play directly in browsers. You see them played routinely, but that's done using a flash wrapper for the MP4 file. You are seeing the quicktime thing because the quicktime plug-in in your browser thinks it can maybe play MP4 files.

To make the video play on its own, you either need to rely on HTML 5, in which case you'll need to convert the video, or create a flash wrapper. Creating a wrapper can be done by a number of programs - I have had good luck with Camtasia, for example. Alternatively, you can find a flash player - flowplayer, for example, is an open source player.

Mike if it won't play in a browser then what is the point about having to enable it in the admin settings?  It looks like I can play a WMV file directly.  Can I play a flash file in the media module?  We can make these files in whatever format we want.  Do you have a suggestion?

Thanks
