Is there a facility to add a simple caption to an image?  If not, can we have one?

John,
After adding the image module to your site, you can navigate to the Module Settings; their you will find a place to add an Header and /or Footer to the module.  This is standard functionality for all modules.

Please consider having a (default) caption stored in the database by the FileManager - as all files have a record in the database, it would be preferable to add additional information as caption, author, copyright, stored in the database record.

Good idea and duly noted, but this would however need a core change.
