[laugh] Actually, I did mention which version I'm running... 4.5.x, which means I have a 4.5.1 and a 4.5.3 installation in addidtion to 4.4.1.  I'm using the most recent version of the news module.

However, your comment about CAS is the first solid clue I've had in sleuthing this problem.  It tends to explain one of two error messages I received early on.  I will need to take this up with my hosting provider.  I will wxplain more later

Thanks!

Sorry wasn't more clear.  The comment about not know which version was for Sean, not you Dave.  Although, the biggest problem in your case to overcome is your host - GoDaddy.  Not that many aren't successfully using them, but I've seen a lot of post with issues on their servers, especially if you use the 1-click installs.  Check through other posts on this forum for some more clues.  I think you may be having issues related to CAS.  The News module is prone to being upset with CAS because of the nature of how it does it's work - issuing web requests.

Cheers.

I should mention that I'm not having any problems with the news module on my test server with the three other versions of DNN.

I'm sure if I mentioned this (I can't see my previous posts while typing this), but the news module is working in one of my GoDaddy installations but not in any of the others.  I've had to send several emails to clarify what has been happening.  I reiterated one of the error messages in the last email:

News Feed Is Not Available At This Time. Error message: Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.WebPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

Their response was as follows:

The DotNetNuke application uses ASP.NET, which is supported on all of our Windows hosting account. I cannot clarify why it would work on one hosting account over another, but the error that you are receiving indicates that the script is trying to perform a function that is outside of medium trust. All of our shared hosting accounts operate in a medium trust environment. If you require permissions to exceed medium trust then you would need at least a virtual dedicated server.

I take this response with a grain of salt.  Obviously, not all of their shared hosting accounts operate within a medium trust envrironment or else the news module wouldn't be working on that one site.

So now my question becomes: does the news module try to "exceed medium trust," as such that it would generate the above error message?

Thanks for your help.

Well to answer your questions, take a look at documentation put together by Cathal.  It should be available in the DNNv3.0.10+.  Also, Cathal blogged about it here:

http://blog.developers.ie/cconnolly/archive/2005/07/01/1498.aspx

There was a lot of discussion about this facet of security when it was introduced in the .Net framework.  One of the first DNN modules to hit it was the NewsFeeds (RSS) module, which I just happended to be the Project Lead at the time.  As we moved forward, we played with settings that allowed the module to be used, setting up CAS to beyond medium trust, but Hosters like GoDaddy didn't exactly buy into allowing changes like that to happen on their cheapie hosted sites.  I worked with a hoster who was more flexible, and continued to use the module.

The simple answer why lies in the way the .Net framework views any application that makes webrequests - they are not always safe, and need to be handled by setting up some custom site security.  I don't know what or how your other sites on GoDaddy are setup, but you could take a look at your settings in the Web.Config to give you a clue.  There's is another Machine.config that the host can setup to allow for CAS custom settings, and it's really a choice that is up to Hosts to support.

There are probably ways to do this by coding the module different, as I think some of the modules get around it, but since the module is being redesigned, it would not help with the older versions (the current version).

So, take some tme to read the doc., which you can access and download here: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Documentation/tabid/478/Default.aspx
