Hi All,

Would like to see a beginners tutorial on how to use the RSS Newsfeed module to display an RSS feed from my forums. I am using the latest version of DNN (clean install) with the latest News Feed and Forums modules (as of Jan 31st, 2008).

I saw the check box option in the Forum settings (Forum Admin/ General settings/RSS Feeds). I have ensured this is checked.

 • What URL do I use to past into the settings in the News feed settings?

 • What (and how) do I modify settings to only display a certain number of items (say 5 or 10?)

 • What options are available to change the newsfeed to show criteria other than the most recent posts? As an example - can the feed show just one forum/category rather than latest from an aggregated category? How is this achieved?

 • What options are there for displaying the latest blogs? (again, using only standard blog module and News module available here).

Hopefully this will prove useful to more than just myself...

Cheers

Brit

The URL you use is the one you see in your browsers address bar after clicking on the RSS or XML icon. (Same for the blog and the forum) To get the forum posts for a single forum, you would have to choose that forum, and then click on the XML icon on that page.

I do not think you can limit the number of items to display using the News Module. I would suggest using the XML Module instead and using XSLT to do that - OR - build your own version of this module - OR - find a 3rd party module similar to the News Module.

Thanks Will...

Been messing around for a few hours and found just what you had suggested... but I have a couple of new problems - and observations.

Firstly... If I click the RSS Icon (Orange syndicate), and take the browser address from the presented code, I get the following displayed on the front page of my web, in the News Feed module... Something is wrong with the formatting.... any suggestions?

this is the fourth posting
Fourth posting.... more smileys below <img alt=''src='/Providers/HtmlEditorProviders/Fck/FCKeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/shades_smile.gif'

Couple of interesting observations... I noticed the News feed module on the front page is not updated straight away... seems to be a waiting period.. so did some digging... and there is a couple of settings - one for update period and one for the number of feeds. Did some messing with it.. but the result is a little unsatisfying... a trade off between posts appearing promptly..versus dissapearing quickly. Anyway round this?

Secondly... if I use the View as XML Icon (Greyed out icon - within one of my individual forums), I get the same formatting issues... as well as the following..

Each forum posting is displayed... and its instantaneous (Yay!)... the more I post, the more are displayed (yay!).. formatting still sucks though.

However, when I went past ten posts (to test what happens to the news feed display, if scroll bars appear at some time or not.. and they dont..) the Newsfeed Module displays a greyed out hyperlink at the bottom labelled more ... when I click this it goes to a page that shows "the page cannot be found" error... with an address /home/tabid/36/

After some digging... it appears as if this is the more option you get in the forums... it appears when going from post ten to post 11 (if you have 10 posts per page as the forum setting). Is this yet another formatting issue?

Would be great to sort out the formatting issues. Would also be great to be able to post just the last 10 posts from a particular forum... rather than having it simply keep getting bigger. Anyway round this using the link from the view as XML option in News Feed?

Without playing withit myself, I cannot offer a 100% accurate suggestion about the formatting issues. As you describe it though, the text sounds like it is HTML encoded, resulting in the text you supplied in your example. A simple call to HTMLDecode would fix that (if necessary).
