On the ticker.xsl transformation for the newsfeed module, can someone tell me how to change of the speed in which the ticker ticks?

Make a copy of Ticker.xsl named TickerNew.xsl, in the copy find the line for the <marquee> tag.  It looks like this:

<marquee direction="left" scrollamount="8" scrolldelay="1" OnMouseOver="this.stop();" OnMouseOut="this.start();">

You need to adjust scrollamount and scrolldelay to suit your needs.  I believe you will find the following page helpful in determining what scroll settings you will need:
