I am trying to come up with a solution for a library of PDF newsletters.  I love the base repository module, but it promotes for a download instead of just opening the PDF in the browser.  Is there a different module with similar features that will open the PDF instead of prompting for a download?  Am I missing a setting or doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Dave

I believe that is a function of the browser not the module. What happens is that a stream of data is returned to the browser, with an associated filename. The browser looks at the contentType of the strem (application/pdf in your case) and uses that to determine what to do. If it knows what the file is and has a plug-in to handle that file type, it will open in the browser. If it doesn't know what to do with the file, it shows the Open/Save dialog box.

Well the thing is the current system I am replacing, just opens the document in the browser.

Here is an example of the way its working now and the page I am replacing.  http://hrhonline.org/ivnewsletters.html

I thought about using the document module, but it stores things in the DB and the PDF's I have are up to 6MB each.  I don't know if it will jeopardize the DB to store a half a gig of PDF's inside it?  How does the repository keep the files?

Also, when you click on the graphic that you upload associated to the file in the repository module, it just opens the graphic in it's own page?  Shouldn't it prompt for download?  Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Dave

@Randall,

It is not clear which of the preceding is your question, but I will try to address the three I see above:

1. Just as Steve Fabian points out, it is responsibility of the client browser if the document is automatically downloaded or opened. As a matter of fact, the first time the browser is asked to download a certain type of file it asks what the user wants to do and gives the option of not asking again. If the user marks this option, the browser will just download (or open) the document the next time.

2. The files are stored, upon configuration of the Repository module, inside the following folder: ~\Portals\0\Repository (where \0\ may change from portal to portal). At least this is so in Repository module v03.01.15 (latest available as of today). So they will not affect the main DB size.

3. Yes, clicking the image (icon) related to the file will open the image file in a new window. This is hardly what a standard user would expect, it should indeed prompt for download.

HTH.

Saludos,
Alejandro.
