if you're talking about on the upload form, where you check off the categories when uploading or editing an item, then you can tell the module to use a multi-column checkbox list by setting the "RepeatDirection" and "RepeatColumns" settings in the form.xml file.  If you have multiple levels of child categories you can also tell it to use a Tree control instead of checkbox list by setting "Select" to "TREE".  If you set "Select" to "SINGLE" you will get a radiobutton list, so only one category can be selected. The default for "Select" is "MULTIPLE" which results in the checkbox list allowing multiple category selections.

Example: To allow multiple categories to be selected and to have 4-columns of checkboxes, your form.xml object would look like this...


If you are talking about the dashboard, on the module settings page, select "Categories (multiple column)"
