How do I reinstall the forum module without losing my current forum(s) structure?

I did an install of Announcements last night and got a Page Fault error and my machine crashed. When I restarted the portal, it wouldnt open with the Forums BIN files in the BIN folder. I took the Forums BIN files out and it started. Announcements did install okay so not sure why Forums got whacked. But, I figure based on the error message... I probably need to reinstall the module as something got messed up with the Forums somewhere somehow, as they were working perfectly just prior...

Page Fault discussion for errors is here in this thread:

So, how do I delete a module, reinstall and not lose all my forum structure? I am okay for now losing my forum test data...

HELP :-)

David

David,

You can install the forum over your existing forum install.

Simply install it again, but do NOT delete ti!  if you delete it you will loose your data!

Be sure to take a backup just incase before you install the forum!

Great thanks... Install over top of a module will keep the original data.... GOOD TO KNOW!

When you say, BACKUP, do you just mean backup the database? or the entire application framework?

Which leads to the question - How do I backup the application, entire DNN? Do I just copy the entire DNN directory and make a copy of it... and do the same for the database. Because I keep getting these random PAGE FAULT errors -- I really need to understand how to keep my entire infrastructure safe? Is there anything built in or a 3rd party admin module that handles backing up the entire DNN? liike a ghosted image of the entire deal... that in case of disasters... I can revert and rollback to...

thanks again,

David

David,

I have 2 tutorials on my site backup - http://www.mitchelsellers.com/Blogs/tabid/54/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/33/Default.aspx and restore - http://www.mitchelsellers.com/Blogs/tabid/54/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/35/Default.aspx that should help answer the "how"

If you have a corrupt module I would actually recommend doing a full backup before trying to install the fix, that way just incase you can revert to your current setup.
