jbeall, I'm picking up what you are throwin down. DotNetNuke is an application framework which is extensible through providers and modules (which in a sense are providers as well). The Core is the heart of that application framework and eventually will not have any modules (except admin and probably html) included with it as a download. This allows whomever to download the Core and then only the modules they wish to use.

I think it would also be a good thing to create some kind of "newbie" package, that contains some sample skins (like the ones that were part of the 3.0 beta versions), some sample portal templates (which are part of the current distribution, but should not be in a core package), and some sample modules (like the current included modules).... I think its inportant to have a distribution that new users can download, install, and use right away... Just downloading a core app is not something you want to bother new users with...

just my 2 cents,

cheers

Each additional package available is more effort for the team. In addition to this it does also add more problems for support and for end users knowing which is right for them. The stance has been more towards 'a-la-carte' because we are trying our best to limit the need for support.

That is a valid point you make. However, the a la carte approach creates a need for extra support as well for first time users... Creating different packages for different groups of users is maybe something that could be delegated to a project group (the installer project exists because of a need for easy "newbie proof" installation, so maybe this is a discussion that should be taken over there)

anyway... sorry for being totally off topic here

cheers,

Erik

So the "Core" is the application framework without any modules?  Or that this is the goal in the future?

So I guess my real question is, is the forums module a "Core" module, and if so, what does it mean to be a Core module?

I am also have a question about this.

I have my site running 4.0.2. I see the latest forum module version is 3.20. Can I still download the module and install it in my site with no problems?
