Hi,

I've got a new DNN install and am working on configuring the forums for the first time.   I've read and searched and would still like to get some clarification on some of the features:

Can you please confirm the following?

  • I want the users to have an ability to upload an image to their post (not talking about attachments).
    • Clicking the Image icon in the editor brings up the Image Properties page.  This seems to only allow URL links and selecting images from the web server's image directory?  This seems like madness to me.
    • Is there no way for the user to simply upload an image form their hard drive?
    • Is there any way to turn off the Image Properties screen so it doesn't show the end user the contents of my images directory on the web server?
    • I am doing this with a folder already created via the File Manager where the registered users have read/write to a new folder I called "Attachments".  If anything, I was expecting to see the contents of this folder, not the Images web folder.
  • Is there any way to attach more than one file?
  • Is there any way to generate a thumbnail if the attachment is an image?
  • Is there any way to restrict attachments to just uploading a new file?
    • This means I don't want to see the "File Location" drop down since it shows folders from my web sever (I do NOT want my users seeing my folder structure in drop downs)
    • Ideally there is just the "Upload file/attachemnt" link.
    • Currently it seems adding an attachment is always a 2 step process - upload file, then select file.  how can this be reduced to just a simple file upload?
    • Are all users going to see all files uploaded as attachments?  I mean will the "File Name" drop down just grow and grow?
  • Is there any other forum package that does the things I want that you would recommend?

Thanks for the help/info.

The answer to almost all of your questions is no. You can checkout active forums but I am not sure it meets all of your requirements out of the box.

Thanks, Cripsy.

Is that all by design?  I don't see any benefit for allowing end users to see folder structure and/or folder contents that were uploaded by other users.

I can't say I've ever seen a forum behave that way.

In my opinion those are some pretty fundamental problems related to using the attachment and image features.

Should I be submitting these points as bugs?  Feature requests?  Not bothering becuase it's not going to happen?  Join the dev team?

My preference is to use only stock DNN modules and projects.

Cheers

File/Folder access is the way it is because the forum uses the DNN Core URL Control. The reason we use this is because of security concerns (ie. minimizing the dangerous areas such as file upload) by limiting the areas in the application do do such things. In the future, if I cannot work a permanent set of changes to the core URL control in, we may consider creating our own solution for file uploads where the folder can be set.

As for the images, this is something i truly believe should be handled by the HTML provider. If an HTML provider is written properly, it can easily accomodate many of the use case scenarios you discussed here. In fact, on the www.dnnforums.com site I use a customized HTML provider and things work great.

As for your preference to use stock DNN modules this may not be something that works out for you if you have specific requirements/requests. Of course, you can start w/ the core modules and create your own customized versions to meet these needs or you can purchase alternatives.
