Hi Guys.

I'm having issues with a new site.  Our forum has over 2000 forums in it, and quite simply when a registered user (can't view forums with registering) views the forum page, it either takes a long time to load or causes IE to crash.

I'm aware that 2000 forums is a large number, but surely we can make this faster.   If I change the settings to show only aggregated forums, it won't allow users to find the forums to create a new thread (eg, find a forum under section A).

The site is www.yourwealthwatch.com.au

David,

My guess is that you might have to make some accomodations/modifications to get the performance where you need it with that many forums.  I'm guessing that isn't necessarily a supported/tested model.

The first step would be to identify WHY you are seeing slowness and/or IE crashes, most likely those are two separate issues.

If you need some help or more detailed guidance, feel free to e-mail me, msellers@iowacomputergurus.com, I don't always see replies here due to notifications not working.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for the quick reply.  It's quite refreshing to say the least.

I'll look into the problems more before emailing you.  Given my noobness...expect to hear from me...hahaha.

Cheers

Dave

I am not sure if the issues is related to the forum, but it can.  We never tested on a large forum as you used.  To create so many forums, need to long for the testing.  But on DotNetnuke there are thousends of posts, so it have also very big datatables.

But please check also your Web and SQL Server about it can related on low memory i.e on shared hosting or virtual servers.  Also a full event viewer and other logs can take your DNN slow.

Ok so I've done a little testing and have found the problem seems to be with Vista...although some more testing is needed.

There is no evidence of a problem in the event viewer after a crash, so I'm thinking the crashing is something to do with Vista rather than the forum itself.  I have no problems viewing the forums using XP...albeit the forums are slow.

With regards the slowness, I have tried adjusting the site caching and compression settings aswell as clearing events viewers and logs, however the forums remain slow.

When viewing the forums in aggregate mode, in individual forum sections (in our case all forums starting with a, b, c, etc etc) or in an actual thread the speeds are fine.  It's viewing the forum in normal mode with all forums visible that the speeds are terrible.

Any ideas on how to speed the forums up?
