We want to create a theme where the container / border style of the thread is different than the container/border style of the posted replies on that thread.

I've tried to look in the source files but could not find how to accomplish that.
Any idea's ?

I assume you are referencing this very interface (post view), and that you want the original post (the one that started the thread) to appear differently than the replies in the same view. If this is what you are asking, there is nothing built-in that does it. To do it, you need to alter the code to do so (Posts UI).
