Greetings,

I need to move Forum table data to another server and portal instance. I was going to import the data from the Forum tables into the other database. Is there anything I should be aware of when moving this data?  We have 15 unmoderated public forums to move to the new portal.

Thanks! Todd

How are you moving the users over? If it is the same install, just a new portal, it could be as easy as just adding a new UserPortals record for the new portal id (which is what I would do, so long as it was the same install). Once I know how you are going to do this, I can talk about how I would approach it.

Hi Chris,

Actually, this was a copy of the old portal which we upgraded so all of the users are already in the portal with the same userids. I just need to move the table data but was not sure of any dependencies. Is it safe to blow the forum data over from the other portal?

Thanks for the quick response.

I am a bit confused by the 'copy of an old portal which we upgraded'. Regardless, I am guessing you have all the data in the same database and you are just trying to associate it with a new PortalID and new ModuleID.

To outline the concerns, lets first look at the relationships:
  1. Module to Groups (Forum_Groups)
  2. Group to Forums (Forum_Forums)
  3. Forum to Threads (Forum_Threads)
  4. Thread to Posts (Forum_Posts), note the first post of a thread is shown with threadid=postid.
You will need to first create a new module instance in the new portal and note the ModuleID. You can then update the ModuleID in the Forum_Groups table (update the PortalID in this table too). Once you do this, I believe the only things you have to worry about are the Forum_Users table (here just update the PortalID to the new one) and the ModuleSettings. You can either reset the settings manually (via the user interface) or update the old module settings to the new one (via ModuleID association).

Chris,

To clarify, we took a copy of our old portal along with users, all of the modules with the forum module and we upgraded to the most current version of DNN. So the forums with the exception of the most current data are the same as the production portal. We probably need to replace the forum_users table since we probably have had a few new users since we took a copy of production. So the portal is the same as the old portal with the exception of the DNN version and many enhancements.

Hope that helps

Todd
