On a test site I have upgraded my company's intranet from 3.0.13 to 3.1.

Everything seemed to work ok, but the 3.0.13 version forums would just come up as

A critical error has occurred.
?

ROFL.  Nothing in the exception log either.

So then I installed the install only version of the 3.10.01 forums.  Installation went fine, but same error.  I should note that I was able to add the forum module to a test page just fine.  This worked both pre and post 3.10.01 install.  Just the forums that already existed exhibited this error.

I know this is pretty much zero to go on.  Heck, if I could just add new forums and change the database to point to the old ones, that would be fine.  If I can't get this to work I am going to have to stick with 3.0.13.

We still see this error occasionally, but normally another click will clear it up.  Is it possible you're experiencing the problem identified in this thread?

You can run some simple SQL to check... something like:

SELECT  PostId
FROM Forums_Threads
WHERE LastPostedPostId NOT IN (SELECT PostId FROM Forums_Posts)

This will tell you if you had a bad reference.  You can fix it by doing the following:

UPDATE Forums_Threads
SET LastPostedPostId = (SELECT MAX(PostId) FROM Forums_Posts WHERE ThreadId = [id])
WHERE ThreadId = [id]

(writing SQL on the fly here... verify).
