It is great to see that many many people posts a lot of question, answers and comments on DotNetNuke forums.

But it has one problem though i.e. Information Overload without having quick access to "Knowledge" part.  This problem really for those who wants to search for answer of something which is already discussed or devised.  I am not the only one who search on DotNetNuke forums quite often, reading through page by page and thread by thread to find the answer which might be on first page or it might be on 15th page. It wastes lot of time of readers.

Averagly, an active thread might have 2-4 contributes towards

  • a true "question" or
  • "answer"

where as rest of threads are just

  • "comments",
  • explaination of questions or
  • dialog between two people to get particular solution.

I just don't want to complain only, I have few techniques to tackle this problem. I will post them in very near future.

BTW - dotnetnuke forums search does not work for me. Instead try Google with search words and add site:dotnetnuke.com as meta data.  If you want to broaden your search replace site:dotnetnuke.com with dotnenuke.

In the version of this module that I am currently working on I have been trying to tackle this problem. I have found that the search here is broken due to the load and time-outs and that means I have to make the SQL more efficient. I know my way around SQL pretty well, but I am not SQL database guru. While I have focused on fixing problems in this area and performance of the module in general, I have also started working on a Thread Status feature. I blogged about this a few months ago I believe.  I wanted it to work similar to what you see at experts-exchange.com but still maintain a more 'forum' layout. I feel this kind of functionality is now there and I am still testing the version and working out other issues I created in some other massive transformations. The first release with this will not have all the potential exposed immediately, but I think you will see things such as: Search resolved threads only, informative posts only, etc will make their way into future versions.

Excellant work Crispy, as said earlier that I am not complaining but suggesting....

Here is what I am suggesting...

Forums should have bit more functionality on moderator side to accomodate KNOWLEDGE side.

  1. When a new message (in moderated forum) is posted, it is notified to moderator.
  2. Moderator logs in and view the thread to approve & or edit.
  3. In this interface, moderator should have interface with following option (or "Thread Status" as you mentioned)
    1. is it "Question", if yes "Rate it (weight)"
    2. is it "Answer", if yes "Rate it (weight)"
    3. is it "Comment"
  4. Forum search should have options related to right Questions and Answers.
  5. Module Developers can utilise true Question posts for next version requirement.
  6. For important threads moderator can utilise Answers posts to develop FAQ that should appear (if exists) as link with each thread as Extracted Knowledge.

I hope this discussion will continue to get some concrete outcome.

- s.ali
