I have just been struggling with an obscure error where some users of the forum get locked out of the module with an error message: "The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.".

The problem turned out to be related to being subscribed to many security roles. When a user subscribed to 6 or 7 security roles and went into the Forum "My Settings" page and hit update then they could not access the forum due to the "...too long" error. When they unsubscribe from some roles and go directly to the "My Settings" page (by using the full URL of that page obtained from another user) and hit update, then they are back running again.

I Hope this post helps save someone the hours of wasted time I just had. And I hope this gets fixed someday.

This issue is actually related to caching. There is a bug in the core broadcast polling provider that makes the cache filename too long.

I am getting this error on a local DNN site that is nested deep in my development folder structure (and exceeds the stated limit).

OOI - where is the limitation and is it related to DNN or is there a work around? Is it .NET's file processing library?

The file is created somewhere in the core when you are doing caching to disk. I haven't looked much into it honestly because its never been a problem for me.

I've gotten this error quite a bit.  What seems to be the issue is when a user has a bunch of roles assigned to them, I guess the rolenames are cached?  Anyhow, if I remove some of the roles, or shorten the role names, they will work again.

It's extremely frustrating.  But not as frustrating as all the "Object reference not set" errors the forums spit out :(.
