I'm in the process of moving over a large professional community site to DNN. We have the potential for an industry-specific Wiki that would likely become quite large in terms of entries and visitors (our site currently has over 100,000 participants and over 10,000 pages of content). I'd like to have a Wiki that comes close, equals or even exceeds the functionality of, say, Wikipdia. It probably needs to be a DNN module to take avantage of DNN's roles-based structure, right? What do you recommend? Is the beta release of the DNN core Wiki module up to the task? Is Ktomics WWWiki a better choice perhaps? What other DNN modules, if any, are available?

I had a similar decision to make when I set up a wiki on my site.  My decision was to setup flexwiki or something similar or go with the core wiki module.  I chose the core wiki module for the following reasons:

  1. Long term support from DNN, in the past i have chosen 3rd party modules that suddenly stop with development.
  2. Integration with DNN roles and users like you mentioned above.

The core wiki is by no means perfect and the Ktomics wiki has some excellent features I would like to see in the core like comments and page ratings etc.   If there were export and import features on both wikis then you choose the better of the two.

It sounds like your wiki will be used extensively and you might want to search out a more mature product and work on integration.

I myself just use the wiki for my projects documentation and it does work well but is not very mature at this point.  I am anxious to see this project grow.

Hope this helps.

Well given the current annoucement from DNN about Ktomics wwwiki being integrated as the Core DNN Wiki module you are actually talking about the same thing. (atleast in regards to the next version (or version or two out depending on integration time)).

Getting to your questions, you will have a few Pain points with any wiki of that size. That will be Database size. I am not sure how the Current DNN Wiki stores data but I know with WWWiki you will want to watch your history table and trim off old versions every so often. As for overhead and speed WWWiki is faster than the Current DNN Wiki, but that is due to the caching features and some other design optimizations that were made to make it fast (Speed of WWWiki was always a top priority and did have an impact in the feature set that it has).

What I would be more conserned about is making sure you installed DNN on enough hardware to handle that much load. What I mean by that is that WWWiki is so trimmed down that what your base install of DNN can handle is more important than the added load of WWWiki (which there really isn't much of).

One thing I would do is turn off the index list on the left hand nav.. Just disable or hide the button because expanding 10000 page links to any web-browser would be a painful experience.

Josh, I followed the link to the thread but, unless I missed it, the thread suggests that the core is NOT adopting WWWiki. What am I missing?
