YouOs  Modified By Jean-Sylvain Boige on 12/28/2006 8:36:25 PM
Hi Jon,

Having played with dnn for a reasonable amount of time, I've followed your work on the client API with interest and I think it's one of the cleaner.

Yesterday I got to know YouOS and I was just astonished. I browsed their source repository to realize it's pretty much a massive version of what you've been moving towards with the client-side framework.

I must say it then also felt a bit threatening, as member of a company strategically relying on dnn, to see that those smart guys from the MIT achieved to put up the foundations of a full blown Service oriented and client driven CMS/OS.

That made me think "integration" thus that post.

When Vicenç came in Paris for our training week early this month, we had a discussion about the limitation for third party components and I think I understand the constraints you depend on.

Sill, their licence and forum posts (2) suggested to me that they would be quite happy to have server side providers introduced and I'd rather see a DNN port of YouOS (one of the finest server side framework plugged into one of the finest client side one), than Google getting their hands on it to commercialize the ultimate 3rd gen CMS-killer OS.

Do you know about that framework?
Do you think it could be inspirational for dnn client framewok?
Do you think it could be an idea to see if we can set up a cross integration project to implement a complete provider?

Edit: I'm also posting there to have their opinion

Never heard of it before this post.

Not knowing much about this framework, it is hard to say.

Do you think it could be an idea to see if we can set up a cross integration project to implement a complete provider?

Perhaps...   but I don't think I am the person to ask.

I have seen many such client frameworks and it is doubtful that any will gain dominance in the near future.  I don't believe that YouOS is really applicable to our same customer base.  While we will be looking to beef up our ClientAPI this year, I am not sure we are ready for the kind of wholesale changes that would be needed to work with a framework like YouOS.

Hi Jon, Joe, thanks for your answers, happy new year btw.

I was putting much emphasis I must admit; obviously client frameworks need the server stuff to make it. Still, the Ajax and SOA buzz suggests that kind of architecture is pertinent, and I find quite impressive what 1 year of dev and a full REST interface could bring to YouOS.

I also posted about that on YouOS forum; I think the discrepancy in the system communities could be turned into an opportunity, by bridging a gap, which in my opinion is lessening anyway.

Full integrating both Frameworks would be complex indeed, and I understand it cannot be considered for now firstly because of the licensing policy: digging into DNN code would probably involve introducing some more providers for the sake of system independency.

Now, as far as I have seen, bringing a server-end for YouOS seems quite feasible with DNN as is, not so long to implement, and in my opinion that's a project of choice to illustrate well what DNN can do better than other good CMS systems.

On the other side, one can think of normalizing the js standards so that several important YouOS classes can be adapted for the DNN client library (taking a few minutes to browse the js code directly should be more convincing that I can try to be here). I'm sure Jon would be quite comfortable with the whole thing, and could take advantage of the best parts without having to change much of the current DNN code base.

Anyway, thanks for the discussion; I'm sure you'll take good decision to "beef up" client API.

Cheers,

Jesse

A logical next step for DNN would be to include pageflake or netvibes type of CMS integration.  YouOS is a different kind of animal.  For the minimum, DNN module drag and drop needs to be ajaxified, no postback should be needed.  if however, DNN clientAPI is built on top of Microsoft Ajax.NET extension (Atlas), it will make more sense.
