I would like to change the list order of countries.  We are a community site for a very small area so most users will sellect the United States.  How can I set the order on the sign up list so that this shows up first.

  • which DNN version are you using
  • changing order is not possible, but most DNN versions use a GEOIP lookup. You might, however, update geoip.dat from www.maxmind.com

Hi Sebastian,

I was using the GEOIP.dat file for resolving user IPs, however switched to using webservice since the dat file quickly falls out of date. Maybe DNN could do similar and avoid overhead of the large .dat file. It appears that DNN loads this large memory stream into cache which I assume consumes lots of resources. Perhaps DNN could also set cookie so that future lookups are not required?

Lauren,

it is one aim of DotNetNuke to keep external dependencies on a minimum level and make sure, that any additions adhere to the DNN license - what would happen, if maxmind changes it's policy and charges for the web service? How do intranet installations act, if connection to the internet is refused?

IMHO it would be a good idea to extract the lookup into a provider, which can be implemented either by using the file, using the web service or no lookup, e.g. in intranet use.

Cheers from Germany,
