We have a site localized in 5 languages, and we managed to get everything working.  Then  we generated "SiteMap.aspx" using the Admin/Search Engine SiteMap" function, we realized that it's doing some CRAZY stuff.  Basically, when using Admin/Pages, I can see all the pages lined up separately by Language, and they all look perfect.  But the "coreSitemapProvider" generates URL's with all kinds of non-existent page versions.

For example, if you have English page and its translated German copy, it makes sense to have 2 URLs - one for each language, right?  Wrong - you will also get an additional version of each of those URLs like .../language/de-DE/Default.aspx for english page, and ../language/en-US/Default.aspx for German page, which will be a wierd combinatiopn of English menu + German content and vice versa.

Unless I am doing something wrong, this is a SERIOUS problem !

I am having problems with this too, I get two sitemap results for each language, so basically 4 results per page. This is a bummer.

We are having the same problem. We are running three languages and have multiple identical URL-s in the sitemap. The problem is known as:

http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?ID=15360&PROJID=2

For example, see http://www.invantive.com/sitemap.aspx

did you make sure, in Admin::Languages to set "include language in URL"?
