I have a DNN 5.6.1 site in preparation with content localized in several languages. The localized pages in the site have become pages of the default language. This happened as a result of someone changing the language configuration, and I'm not sure exactly what actions were taken, however, it looks to me that languages have been disactivated, and then reactivated again.

I have a couple of questions relating to this:
  • if a language is disactivated in a localized portal, what happens to existing pages: do they become pages of the default language?
  • I see that the pages in question still have their CultureCode column correctly set: is there any way of restoring the pages to the correct language?

Disabling languages should disable associated pages, but not affect all other pages. This is controlled by page culture and linking of pages via GUID columns in tabs table (which is hard to debug, I know).

On further investigation, it appears that what happened is this. The site content was prepared before Content Localization was enabled. With some 30 user pages created, an administrator enabled Content Localization, after enabling the required languages for the site. The process copied the existing default language pages, but something failed in the process, leaving all the pages "below" the default language.

When you try to delete the newly created pages, DNN deletes the corresponding page in the default language. It is not possible to access page configuration for the default language pages (error: "An item with the same key has already been added").

Have tried to reproduce the failure on a staging version of the same site, without success. I suspect some data condition in the production site provoked the failure, and it will now prove difficult to identify.

Basically, it looks like the site is a write-off :-(. Or does anyone have any ideas? Could I delete the newly created tabs using SQL and then recreate them from the Languages page?

Looking at the Tab table again more carefully, the CultureCode column was set to the default language culture for all the other language pages. Changing that restored the correct relationship between language and pages. Apparently the correct relationship between default language pages and corresponding other languages had been maintained.

However, it continues to not be possible to edit default language page configuration. Anyone got any ideas?

The error is:

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: An item with the same key has already been added. ---> System.ArgumentException: An item with the same key has already been added. at System.ThrowHelper.ThrowArgumentException(ExceptionResource resource) at System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2.Insert(TKey key, TValue value, Boolean add) at DotNetNuke.Entities.Modules.ModuleInfo.get_LocalizedModules() at DotNetNuke.Admin.Modules.ModuleLocalization.LoadTabModules() at DotNetNuke.Admin.Modules.ModuleLocalization.get_Modules() at DotNetNuke.Admin.Modules.ModuleLocalization.DataBind() at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.Tabs.ManageTabs.BindLocalization(Boolean rebind) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.Tabs.ManageTabs.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Problem solved. After resetting the CultureCode column on the Tab table, there remained a duplicate key in collection problem which appeared to be connected with module localization. I checked the CultureCode column on the TabModules table and sure enough, it had been set to the culture of the default language for all modules. After setting it correctly (so that it corresponded to the CultureCode of the related Tab), the site appears to be fixed.
