About how languages work.

I am doing a site with a French version and having never done this before have a couple of questions.

I have installed the FR DNN language pack - all works as you would expect.
This site uses Smithcart so I got the Fr language pack but when installing the installer takes me to the "is this a skin /container/other" page with no way past.
As these are just resource files I reasoned that I could simply install manually but this seems not to have worked.
Q1> can language pack be installed manually ? (ftp to the respective AppLocalresouces folder).

Q2> how do I go about applying languages to page names or is the normal practice to simply make extra pages with the correct title wording?

Thanks

Ian

1) if your package has a manifest, it should be fine placing the package inside /install/language
2) you either need a 3rd party solution like DSLocalizator from dnn.tiendaboliviana.com or might try using DNN localized pages (make sure to backup all files and the database before starting with it).

Hi Sebastian

Thanks for your answers.  I worked out that page localisation needs a 3rd party tool such as DSLocalizator - this gives no indication of if it is compatible with DNN 6 but I will have a play on a localhost.

Re my language pack with install problems.  No manifest - does this file simply tell the installer where to put things or are other entries made when installing languages?  As this comes from SmithCart I will get in touch with them.

BTW: I am starting to have some appreciation of how difficult DNN can be as soon as you need anything other than English. I certainly more understand the tone of some posts here in languages.

Re DNN Localised pages: Sounds a bit dangerous. I think I read somewhere that it cannot be turned off once initiated?

Anyway thanks very much

Ian

AFAIK latest version of DSLocalizator works with DNN 6 as well.
Are you sure there is no .dnn file in your language pack? in this case you would need simply unzip the files into proper directories. Did you use language packs from www.dotnetnuke.fr?
Your information is correct that using core localized pages is a one way road - it cannot be turned off again.

HI Sebastian

I am trying DSLocalizator now on a test site. There is a beta available for this now that says dnn6.
I have to say that I have no idea conceptually of how this is supposed to work.  Shame there seems to be no docs.

For example: I am supposed to have duplicate content on each page which the DSLoc makes visible based on language selection.
I also have no idea of to deal with page names.

I am wondering if the easiest method is to have a child portal for each language.  The complicating and probably deciding factor is the e-comm app.

Re Language pack .dnn file   - the pack from Giles's site was fine (Thanks Giles),  The problem pack was from SmithCart so I will see what they say.

Thanks for your help Sebastian

Ian
