I'm using DNN 6.2.9 and I'm having a real bad time in general trying to figure out which resx file to translate if I want to change a string in a particular module.
If anyone has a failsafe quick way to find out where a page is getting its resource strings from and therefore where I should go find the correct resx file in the Language Editor that would save me HOURS of work.

Moreover I am a little confused by the Register.aspx page
Some items just refuse to appear in a language other than English and I just don't seem to be able to find the exact resource file that controls these strings.

I am even more puzzled by the fact that the standard Registration page and a custom registration page I created following the tutorial on this website contain different fields??!!
And are apparently using different resource files.

Is there a quick and easy way to figure out which resource file I should change in order to translate or change the string appearing on any one given module?
If so could anyone please share this information with me.

Last but not least my installation, due to heavy customizations over time, now contains a plethora of versions of each and every .resx file for a number of modules
For example I have there resource files for the Register applocalresources module
Register.ascx.it-IT.Host.resx
Register.ascx.it-IT.Portal-8.it-IT.Host.resx
Register.ascx.it-IT.Portal-8.resx
Register.ascx.it-IT.resx

Can I safely remove some of these?
What are the .Host resource file exactly for?

Thanks a lot
Edo

for best results, you should first deploy latest DNN language pack (Host > Extensions > Available Extensions).
When creating new language packs for modules, use the edit pen in "system" column. If you want to override a translation from an installed language pack, use either the pen in Host column (all sites of your DNN) or site (current website only) - those will be stored in separate files (.host.resx and .portax-x.resx) and not be overwritten on LP updates.
For all 3rd party modules, you should find resource files in Local Files > Desktop Modules > Module Name > App_LocalResources or Local Files > Desktop Modules > Vendor Name > Module Name > App_LocalResources.
Regarding registration: to localize user profile properties, use property definition in Admin > Site Settings, 3rd tab.

Thanks Leupold,
That was useful information.
I managed to simplify and adapt the registration page to my needs.
Now the problem is I would like to write some stuff on the registration page and the Register.aspx does not allow me to put any other modules on the page even if I log in as Host.
I followed the tutorial for this and added a new page, authorised the Users and Roles module for my portal and added it to the page.
The only problem is It added a bunch of fields I don't want on my new custom registration page.

How do I go about controlling the fields that appear on my custom page?

Can I simply do the same operation once I substitute the standard page with my custom page in the Site settings -> Advanced settings tab?
Or is there another way of going about this?

Thanks a lot

if you need to add information to the registration or login page, you need to create a DNN page, add the registration/module to it and insert your information to the HTML module on the page. Last you need to select this page for login / registration in Admin > Site Settings.
