My site that is written in the english language is targeting people in multiple countries in europe (NOT just one country). The site will offer content (promotions) that are not specifically targeting people from one country but multiple countries in Europe. I have read the google documentations and it says that you should specify the GENERIC english language as "en" in the hreflang. I don't want to restrict the content of my website to a specific region so my question is the following:

Will the country abbreviation, after the language abbreviation, in the html lang tag like for example "html lang="en-GB"" affect the visibility and the ranking of the website in the search engines outside that region (Great britain)? Will websites with only a language abbreviation in their html lang tag have an advantage outside United kingdom in comparison to me that has an country abbreviation after the language abbreviation in the html lang tag. I will add that i am using a gLTD .com domain for my website with the generic english language that is targeting multiple countries.

Regards

S S,

I don't think so, but I am not the big SEO specialist. The "country abbreviation" as you call it is called culture code, and does not really affect the language, only some cultural differences within the same language (e.g. the date format is different in en-US and en-GB).

Happy DNNing!

do not mix up language and countries. Language variants are not interpreted to be targeting a specific country only.
