We have an install of DNN with 2 portals -  when a user 1st browses to one of the portals it syncs with AD, logs them in and displays their user name...beautiful.  However when they browse to the 2nd portal it does not display their user name or log them in - it also does not log them in when they browse to windowssignin.aspx on the 2nd portal.

We looked at the DB tables and found that the user is only added to the UserPortals table for the 1st portal not the 2nd...they never seem to be added to this table for the 2nd portal even allowing time for cache to be cleared.  If we manually add them to the UserProtals table for the 2nd portal then it all works fine...they are auto logged into both portals.  Has anyone else encountered this and does anyone know of a nice fix / workaround?  nb. if the user is a superuser then the UserPortals table appears to be bypassed and the login works fine on both portals.

Many thanks.

This is an issue that we will be addressing (hopefully) with a total revamp of the AD authentication system.  Like you noted, user accounts are tied to the portal that they log into initially.  This makes it quite difficult get AD authentication working in more than one portal.  I've been fighting with that problem for awhile, and settled on only one portal having AD integration.

Unless someone else has a work-around, I don't know of a way to get that to work.

There was some discussion of this HERE with a code work around.

Ah-Hah!  That is why the topic sounded so familiar!
