I need to create a custom provider so that logins go to my own database of customer information, rather than the default DNN implementation.  I've played a bit with the code for doing a membership provider.  I then ran into the authentication provider project.

What is the relationship of an authentication provider to a membership provider?

Which is more appropriate to customize if one wants to do their own login for DNN?

Thanks,

Dave

The AD provider reads from the domain Active Directory and then either creates the account in DNN if it doesn't already exist or it updates the account if it does. Something similar would probably be the best direction in your case. Actually all of the authentication providers act in this manner (LiveID, OpenID, and, I think, Cardspace). So you could look at any of them as a template.

But how is this different than writing a membership provider that also keeps an external data store in sync with DNN's membership tables?  When is it better to write an authentication provider vs. a membership provider?

Thanks,Dave
