I'm using the following:  Windows Server 2008 R2 Ent. (x64), IIS 7.5, and DNN 7 Community Edition.  I'm trying to configure the Active Directory authentication provider version 5.0.4.  My ultimate goal is to use DNN for an intranet site and enable automatic login for the users.

The most frustrating issue is with the configuration process (Admin>Extensions>DNN_ActiveDirectoryAuthentication).  If I try to use a username and password, the process fails on the "Checking Root Domain" step.  If I DON'T use a username and password, the process appears to complete without errors.  Shouldn't this be the other way around?  It fails even if I use the domain administrator credentials.  I have a suspicion that this issue is also preventing me from getting auto-login to work.

I've read the documentation and scoured the Internet for solutions but haven't found anything useful so far.  Anyone have any ideas about why my config process fails with credentials or suggestion about things to check?

Does the authentication actually work when you don't provide the credentials? Test that and let us know.

Yes.  Even though I don't provide the user credentials during the module configuration process, I can manually log in to my DNN site with any domain user credentials via the "Windows Login" tab.

As I was verifying this information, I noticed that I'm now getting the following message:  "401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials." on initial visits to my site.  If I close the browser and go back to the site, I don't get that message again.  Also, I still have to log in manually.  This occurred in both IE 9 and FF 17.

Update:

I'm not exactly sure what has happened, but I can now include user credentials in the setup process.  I deleted my site to start from scratch and must have done something different during the new install.  Unfortunately, I still can't get auto-login to work.

Update:

On a whim, I decided to go directly to the Windows Signin page ("http://mydomain.com/mysite/DesktopModules/AuthenticationServices/ActiveDirectory/WindowsSignin.aspx") instead of the default page and discovered that automatic login is actually working.

In order to achieve "seamless" automatic login I had to do the following:

1.  Add the domain name (mydomain.com) to the following areas:

  • IE 9:  Tools>Internet Options>Security>Local Intranet>Sites>Advanced
  • FF 17:  about:config>network.automatic-automatic-ntlm-auth-trusted-uris

2.  Make the signin page ("/DesktopModules/AuthenticationServices/ActiveDirectory/WindowsSignin.aspx") the highest priority default document for the site.

  • IIS Manager>find and select site name>Default Document

Is there a way to do avoid the authentication prompt without messing with the browser?
