Hi,

I am having a strange behavior with the blogs RSS feed. I'm doing this with a fresh install using starter kit 4.8.4.
- I have created a first blog called "MyBlog" with the option "Syndicate this blog" checked
- I have created a second blog called “Blog2” as a child of “MyBlog” whit the option "Syndicate this blog" checked and the “Syndicate independently” unchecked (my goal is to have only one rss feed to all blogs, master and childs)
- I have set the “MyBlog” as the “Personal blog page” but the problem is the same if I haven’t
- I have created 2 entries for the “MyBlog” and 2 entries for the “Blog2”
- When I click the RSS Feed icon, the XML only contains the last entry (the other 3 are missing)
- If I change the child blog “Blog2” checking the option “Syndicate independently” I get another very strange result: The master icon feed shows a XML file with the 2 entries for the child blog “Blog2” (The 2 entries for the master blog are missing), the icon for the “Blog2” feed shows exactly the same as the master one, the 2 entries in the child “Blog2” (I guess for this feed the result is correct).
As I said, this test was made with a fresh install of DNN just downloaded from site and configured just for this propose.

Hi Miguel,

your concerns are similar to this post, I guess. It is not very intuitive, but you have to consider the child blogs in the current version as a workaround to mimic categories. Clicking on the parent blog syndication icon you will gain access only to the entries filed under the child blogs. However, entries added after the creation of child blogs will be listed in the RSS feed even if they are not filed. This is probably a consistence leak that will need to be rivised.

Checking the "Syndicate indipendantly" option, will only show an icon for the child blog to access only the entries filed in that child blog. Then, to make the long story short: only the entries filed under a child blog are syndicated, you have the ability to syndicate each blog indipendantly however. This logic will be enhanced in future versions, so having your feedback will help much the team to chose the right approach.

Hi Dario,

Thanks for your help. I just don´t understand yet is why having all the child blogs with the option “Syndicate independently” unchecked, the master feed (the only one that remains on the site) only shows the last entry (If you add another entry in any child blog, the previous disappears from the feed and only the new one is displayed).

To work around this issue I have done the following:

- I have set all my child blogs as “Syndicate independently” Checked (this way the master feed will show entries for all child blogs except the master one)
- Never enter an entry in the master blog as those just disappear from the RSS feed (all entries must be in a child blog)
- I have commented line  52 of the bloglist.ascx :

<!--<asp:HyperLink ImageUrl="~/desktopmodules/Blog/Images/feed-icon-12x12.gif" Runat="server" ID="lnkBlogRSS" Visible="False" target="_blank"></asp:HyperLink>--> 
 
By Commenting this line, the icon to the rss feed of the child blogs gets hidden (I have also commented the link to the feed in the viewblog.ascx). This way I get the behavior I need: Only one feed to all blogs. Is this the best solution ? What else can I do ?

Hi Miguel,

thank you for posting your workaround, at a first look it seems to work smooth. The problem with child blogs is that they have a structure that would work much better for departmentalization rather than categorization (thanks to Rip Rowan for this specification), hence the leak of consistency in RSS syndication.

Enhancements to the source code are needed to correct the main RSS feed creation logic. Modifications to the .ascx file, however, cannot be considered as long-term solutions, but are welcome in the meantime the team gets its way on the modifications. Remember to re-apply your changes after upgrading to 3.4.1.
