In a single portal, how can you configure multiple blogs each containing their skin.

Let's say we have a sports site with 4 different categories.

[Basketball]
[Football]
[Baseball]
[Golf]

I would like to be able to create a page for each category, and have the relevant postings/categories appear in that page so that i can change the skin on each page.

Is this possible with the core blog module or is there a 3rd party tool that can do this functionality?

The problem you are going to run into is the Blog Module uses one page to display a blog regardless of what blog it is.   In other words, the same page is used for every blog, just dynamic content.  This is going to be a limiting factor, because in DNN you can choose a skin per actual page.

The best suggestion I would make is to create a module that would utilize the data from the blog module.  I would go this direction rather then customizing the actual blog module because otherwise you would break upgrade path.

crap...  so it sounds like it's not possible using the core blog module.

do you know of another module i could use in its place?  i need a quicker solution for this project, as opposed to developing my own module.  I haven't dabbled in module development for dnn so I could be opening a can of worms if i go down that path.

You may checkout this module... http://www.snowcovered.com/Snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=13664 For full disclosure, I havent actually used this module before, so I dont know if it will meet your requirements, but reading the description it sounds like a viable alternative. Your best bet would be to email them what you are trying to accomplish and see if they believe their module will support your requirement.

I have found it to be possible to add the Blog modul to multiple pages.  Simply change the "Personal Blog Page" setting on the Blog Module.

I have done this for a sports blog.  Each sport had their own blog and page.
