I understand the problem, what I just say is that some modules just need some more help from the core team. I think the core team should mark some modules as prioritary and help their teams in enhancing them.

Respecting the bugs problem, I think many of the modules are not properly tested, I know how hard is to prpoerly test a program, what could we do to enhance the final quality of the modules? I'd love to have a public development branch, in which people could download and test the latest checked-in code. People from the public could download, but not check-in the changes. I'd love to test it. In my very particular case, I'd love to get the code of the blogs, test it, and maybe notify/fix the bugs I found.

What I think we (The DNN project) can't afford is not releasing a module version in a whole year, having lots of bugfixes already checked in.

The message I'd like to say is that most people will choose DNN based on the quality of the modules, and (IMHO) we need to identify what of the are prioritary and enhance them.

We now have a module release process for Core modules. It includes numerous steps checked by numerous people. It includes everything from security checks to upgrade script checks. Right now the latest version of the Survey module (and a bunch of other Core modules) is still winding it's way through the process. I think you will be happier with the latest versions as they are released.

(BTW Nina, emails to you all bounce back )

Try using my nina.meiers@gmail.com address - I have some spam filters on our server to eliminate some of the 1500 + spam per day I was getting, also have a new configured email address, with my .net.au domain,  on a completely different mail server and IP to see if it doesn't help. It's been a problem for about 4 months now and we're seeing the end of it.   Not everyone is affected, and I'm sorry you can't send me mail.

>> Michael - in reference to the mistakes you made - I'm sorry you didn't have some proper initiation and mentoring coming into the project so you didn't waste your time on having to undo things.  I have known for years about the classes and how module developers need to work with them. Nothing worse than having to undo your own work!!

I'd really like to help the teams who develop the modules I use (it would be difficut to help teams of mules I don't use daily), and I'd really love to contribute them with little enhancements and/or bugfixes. I'm sure most of the users would love to do it.

If you think about it... we all wanna have the best blog/gallery/forum out there, but there has to a really good feeback system out there, I've had made many suggestions about the modules I use, some of them had been listened and some not.

What I really want is to be able to get the lastest code, not a code from a long, long time ago, and if I make an enhancement be able to publish it at the forums. For example: I implemented the code to show blog posts in IE7 blog feeds, I posted it at the public forums, but I don't know if it will be included in the next blog version. I'd really love to know if there will be a similar (or the same) functionallity in the next blog version. I think there is a lack of communication between the project members and the final users (at least in some modules).

The power of open source is that every one can make enhancements of the code, so let's let people make enhancements!, make people know what's going on in the next version and how can they contribute. I must confess I get sick whe visiting some modules and see that there have not been any post in the project blog in a whole year! There is a "so called" team leader that haven't make signs of life in a year and some core member that is having all the effort to make things work...

So my suggestion is to have a development branch out there, where people can download, compile and test the enhancements/bugfixes, and having the possibility to give a more straightful feedback to the team developers, implementing their solutions to the problems and if they wanna share them, make them public using the forums.

I myself am bery discouraged about that because I don't wanna code a solution for some time issue in blog because I don't know if it will be integrated it in the next version, I really don't know if some team member will read abou it in the forums.

Resuming I love to help from my position not only making suggestions (which is great) but giving code to enhance things, but nowadays I don't have the proper tools to make that, what I ask for is for that tools.

I can't speak for the Blog project, but if this were the Survey project you were talking about I would say "there is nothing stopping you from creating and publishing and maintaining a Survey module."  A module does not have to be a official Core module to helpful to the community.

So we would encourage you to email the project leaders and offer your assistance. If things don't move the way you like then post your own version. There are literally dozens of "Survey Modules" out there. I have had some people submit code and if I can't use it I tell them why (for example one fix for the Firefox browser bug used a method that would not work with the new code structure). Many of the people just go ahead and publish their version.

My job is to just keep fixing bugs and move the official version forward. And by the way I am open to anyone who wants to work on the new enhancements with me. Contact me using this form.
