Is it possible to relocate of a DNN installation to another (company is changing web servers).

Is it as simple as:
  • installing the same version of DNN on the target server
  • copying all of the folders from source to target
  • backing up database and restoring onto new database server (if needed)
On the surface I don't see why this would not work, but I thought I would ask to see if anyone else has gone through this?

Thanks,
TJ

So long as you are confident your new server is fully configured to run the same type and version of portal then you don't even have to install DNN first.

It's safer to simply copy the old site files and folders over in one piece... zip it up, send it over, unzip it. Then check/redirect your domain, Asp.Net version and do not fail to reset the correct DNN file permissions (probably Network_Service=RWXD) on the entire site after unzipping it!

If you are changing domain names or you want to test it first with a spare domain (saves waiting for the old one to propigate) then be sure to add that domain as a portal alias before you copy the site and db over. This will let you open the portal on the new server with the temporary or new domain name.

Then go ahead and create the new blank db and restore your backed up copy into it. After that you need to update your web.config to point to the new db server and you should be set.

Good luck,
Rob
