I'm totally new to the whole portal thing. I am trying to install the events module. None of the documentation provides me with a satisfactory explanation of where the zip file should be unzipped to and how to actually install the module. Could someone please explain, as in slowly, obviously no Einstein lineage here!!!

The closest I got to success produced the following error:

Error: Calendar is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Events.Events'. ---> System.Web.HttpParseException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Events.Events'. ---> System.Exception: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Events.Events'. ---> System.Exception: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Events.Events'. ---> System.Web.HttpException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Events.Events'. at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.GetType(String typeName, Boolean

etc, etc, etc.

you install a module by logging in as "host" user, and enter "Module Definitions" item in "host" menu. select "Upload New Module" from the context module and browse for the module zip. after you clickes "save", the module gets installed and can be used from the dropdown list.

Please notice, that you cannot use the source code version in DNN4.x.x

Do you have any idea when a source version will be available for DNN4 (and which will run in VWD)?  I have installed the latest install (NOT the source) into DNN4.4.0, and although it installed successfully, it does not work.  When I press the View Date link (from the editevents.ascx), IE7 creates a blank popup, and displays messages about errors on page.

I would be willing to help debug this issue, but I do not have any DNN4 source!

It seems to me the DNN team is crippling itself by continuing to maintain everything in .NET 1.1 mode. After all, .NET 3 is now with us!

The decision to develop the core only for ASP.NET 2.0 was only made last december (see this blog from Shaun where he announced that: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/BlogsDotNetNuke/tabid/825/EntryID/1210/Default.aspx )

I hope you understand that as long as DNN was actively developed in BOTH asp.net versions, it would have been a very bad idea to make modules ASP.NET 2.0 only version. And although technically, every project had the freedom to create 2 seperate versions of their module, no project did that, due to the fact that it is hard enough to maintain 1 version, let alone 2.

You will see many modules being released in asp.net 2.0 versions this year, the Events module will be one of them. However, the next release of the events module, which will contain a lot of bug fixes, will still be an ASP.NET 1.1 version, simply because a lot of people are still running dnn 3.x on asp.net 1.1, for various reasons.

Having said that.. there is nothing that will stop you from upgrading the current module to dnn 4 / asp.net 2.0 yourself. You can use the module upgrade wizard (available from the downloads page) for that

except that I would first have to install VS2003, set up a DNN 3 project, install events module, and then convert...

I understand the pressures on the DNN volunteers and I value the time they give for free.  I just think that perhaps a decision could have been made some time ago to freeze DNN3 development and to release new versions only in DNN4.  That way you would get more users upgrading faster.  The Events module is an example of a module that has recently been greatly enhanced in DNN3, but inevitably that has introduced some bugs which now need to be fixed - involving still more work in a legacy environment.  I suspect the truth is that most of the DNN developers are still more comfortable with .NET 1 and VS2003.  After all, most of the official docs still refer to DNN3 and ignore DNN4.
