I've run into another problem trying to accomplish this with the html module.  If I set the module setting to not display the container, it causes some user roles with editing rights to not be able to access the edit control:-(  Basically, there's no drop down menu.

Nice problem... not easy to solve I think.
I see 3 possibilities.
1. You could create a container that shows the contentpane just after the module title (but you would have to use div's and not tables)
2. Add a links module to the pane and put it in place with absolute positioning (but you would have to use relative positioning if somebody is logged in, or changing the link could be difficult)
3. Add a hardcoded link to the container
Add a links module to the pane.
Run a javascript that reads the link in the links module and replaces the hardcoded link with the one from the module, then sets the links module's visibility to hidden.

All workarounds but maybe one of them will help you.

Thanks Timo and dtinvest for offering some possible solutions.  I really appreciate folks who take the time to understand the problem and give suggestions.  dtinvest-I know about the read more... feature of the announcements module.  I am trying to make our school portal as easy as possible to manage/edit and would prefer to limit the number/types of modules I use.  The html module (using the FCKEditor) is the primary module I'm spending my time configuring and is the module I use for announcements, news, events, etc.  I know there are other modules for publishing this kind of info.  Maybe after the editing users are more accustomed to DNN somewhat, I'll introduce more modules and replace the html modules used to handle things like events and announcements.

I'm still pretty frustrated at this point that all suggestions/workarounds continue to point to more containers being created.  I am not a developer, programmer or designer, but a hard headed end user who has had to learn some programming and design techniques to get this far.  I accept that and so far have accepted the learning curve that comes with DNN.  But I'm late in the development process and am somewhat resistent to more workarounds to do something that is a common feature/popular trend in website design and usability.  So, will I end up creating a site that is less than what I envisioned because I have bumped up against a limitation or weakness in DNN-the container?  If so, how can that be good for DNN?  The Ferrari sells because of its combination of power, finesse, styling and drivability.  Out of these 4, Ferrari knows that if any of these suffer, sales suffer.  The more DNN gets adopted and begins to face outward on the web, the more important the role of the designer and end user becomes. And I mean more important, not the most important.  I hope our contributions are heard.

This limitation has been brought up before-you can read about it here

but their voices and concerns eventually got buried in the 1000's of post.  Maybe they accepted the limitations and made compromises to their final designs. Maybe I'm where they were at and at the same phase of development and now the weakness is forcing me to compromise my final design.  I hate to compromise at the point of the end user though...

Sorry but in this case I don't agree with what you say about DNN.
A ferrari is a commercial product, you have some options you can change but they are very limited.
If you would want it to run on electricity you would either need 10 years of education or pay 200.000$ extra.
For DNN the situation is kind of the same, only by default it's a lot more flexible then a Ferrari and it's a lot easier to modify. If you really need some special modifications and you don't have the skills, hire somebody...
You say:
"But I'm late in the development process and am somewhat resistent to more workarounds to do something that is a common feature/popular trend in website design and usability"
That's what the announcement module was created for, you could consider to use it (it's not that difficult to use).
DNN's functionality is split up in different modules. If there would be only one module providing all functionality it would most probably be impossible to use because of the 1000 options.....
If you want to stay with only one you cannot blame this on DNN's functionality IMHO.

By the way.
The post you are refering to is not about the weaknesses of DNN, its about the incomplete skins some people sell. They leave out default DNN functionality.

Ok...forget the Ferrari example if this is a distraction to the topic. Should I hire someone to creat the functionality to put a link where end user logic thinks that capabiltiy should exist? Yes...I can and may do that or I may compromise my overall design and end user experience at this point. Like I said...Is that good for DNN?

I would recommend you reread the thread I referenced.  It begins about skins, containers and module actions but ends in a focused dialogue about the weakness of the container paradigm in DNN.  Being pretty new to DNN, I encountered this weakness late in the develpment stage of my site. I have probably done a poor job descibing the weakness and a disservice to others who have more elequently expressed it, but I believe all of us have wished to bring attention to it in order to contribute to the community and make DNN better.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the "w" word.
