From the enterprise manager you can restore the backup to the newly created database.
In MSSQL 2000
-Right click the new database
    -All tasks > Restore Database
-Options Tab: [v] Force restore over existing database
        -General Tab: (o) From Device
                               [Select Devices]
                               [Add]
                               Select the backup
                               [OK]
          -[OK]

User:
In my case the user is in the backup, but I use windows authentication.
I think for sql server auth. you would have to recreate the user
It's better to create a new user, since the dbo has all the rights, even to delete other databases on te server.
If you are unsure about this, I would try it beforehand on a test machine.

For my personal backups to avoid dependence issues on computer/server names I take a backup of the .mdf data file for the database.  I can then "Attach" this database to any different server that I need.

You are right it's easier to move that way but it's difficult to do a scheduled backup.

Very true, but is it even possible to restore a .bak file to a database with the same name on a different server?  I tried that the other day and did not have any success.

Yes you can, the only thing is that you have to set "Force restore over existing database"
Did this as a test for my post this morning
