Hi.

I used to have a DNN 3.x portal in a shared hosting environment, but yesterday I decided to upgrade to DNN 4.x. I asked my host to move my stuff to an ASP.NET 2.0 server, which they did, and I uploaded the DNN 4.4.1 upgrade... Boom!

Server Error in '/' Application.

Parser Error

Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific parse error details and modify your source file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: The type 'DotNetNuke.Common.Global' is ambiguous: it could come from assembly 'D:\hshome\<myusername>\<mydomain>\bin\DotNetNuke.DLL' or from assembly 'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\293a2c0a\9db94f9b\App_Code.zwzukla8.DLL'. Please specify the assembly explicitly in the type name.

Source Error:

Line 1: <%@ Application Inherits="DotNetNuke.Common.Global" Language="VB" %>

Source File: /global.asax    Line: 1

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.42; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.210

I'm considering starting all over with a wipe and a 4.4.1 install from scratch.

If so, how much can I import from my old 3.x backup in terms of page structure, page content, and more importantly, users and pictures (Ventrian Simple Gallry)?

I still hope that my host's support can fix what's causing the parser error, but I don't know how likely that is or how long I can wait for it.

Any input is appreciated.

So I finally got an answer:

My host's support wrote:

Hi Tom

The error is somewhere in DNN, you could try to reinstall it again.
We do not offer support for errors in the DNN code.

Since the support didn't mention a specific cause for the error, I'm pretty sure they couldn't find one, and then concluded it couldn't possibly be a problem with their systems. Maybe they are right maybe they are not. I don't know, and I have no means to find out.

However, I'm fed up with waiting around while my site is down, so I've decided to go for the wipe.
  • Is there any easy way I can extract some of the page content from my backups? It's mostly Text/HTML modules.
  • And then my SimpleGallery. I have all the pictures, but the gallery/subgallery structure is flattened in the file system. It's probably a question for the Ventrian forums, but if anybody here has a solution, it'll be great too.
I keep my fingers crossed - it would be really nice, if there were a few short cuts to rebuilding stuff.

I'm sorry dvbii, I never figured it out.

I started all over and had to rebuild pretty much everything from scratch.

Have you had any changes to your hosting environment - server move, ASP.NET upgrades, new MS SQL server or anything related?
