Hi

DNN installation has become a nightmare. I had DNN 4.3.4 on my swedish web hotell. Installing it was no problem. This week I tried to upgrade to 4.4.1 with the upgrade package. It failed. I got several error messages regarding execute problems because of lacking certain dbo rights.

So I tried emptying out everthing to do a clean install of 4.4.1 with the intall package.

This also failed.

Does DNN 4.4.1 require increased read, write, modify, execute rights then 4.3.4 ?

I get the following error message:

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Please help me someone out there. Why is it so extremly hard to install 4.4.1 when it was so simple to install 4.3.4 ?

Looking forward for feedback.

Thanks in advance

Rolf

Rolf:

When you did the upgrade, did you remember to save and copy the "MachineValidationKey" and the "MachineDecryptionKey" in the Web.config file???

If you did not, see the Upgrade section of the Installation guide.

Hi

yes, I followed the guidelines in detail. Even so, when I tried a clean install it still didn´t work.

My ecommerce store is down and I am really suffering. I really need help!

Why is DNN so extremly complicated to upgrade and install??? I had a programmer with 10

years experience with me trying to help me out but even he was pulling his hair in the end.

This really has to improve otherwise DNN will die out.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

Rolf

You should revert to backup and start the upgrade process over.

Never do an upgrade on a production site, make a backup first, then do the upgrade on the backup.

From the error you showed in your initial post it seems like there is an issue with the connectivity to the database.  Have you checked the database connection strings in the new/revised web.config?

By the way, the issue with dbo rights you mention are also related to the database access, not file level access.  Tell us more about how you have setup the database and how you setup the DB user authentication.  Again, check your DB connection string.
