I did clean install of v4.3.4 on Win/XP Prp; SQL Express attachable database and was able to configure it, setup users, etc..  Out of the blue came this webpage:

------------

 DotNetNuke Upgrade Error

The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'BRAD11\ASPNET'.

-----------
I can open the database using this OLE/DB conection string with QueryTool:

Provider=SQLNCLI;Server=.\SQLExpress;AttachDbFilename=F:\DotNetNuke_4\Website\App_Data\database.mdf;Database=database;Trusted_Connection=Yes;

Below is my WebConfig:

        <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

  <appSettings>
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" />

I'm very experienced with SQL/2000, but have been struggling with attachable databases under SQL 2005 Express.

Does anybody have any ideas on this one?   Thanks!

I've been struggling with the same problem for over a week.  File has correct permissions for ASPnet as does the database (I attached to it and added ASPnet).  Then I found an additional setting on MSDN that made it work - Initial Catalog=InstanceDB.  This is from my web.config;

  <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=true;Initial Catalog=InstanceDB;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>

It appears that you are trying to use a trusted connection however your ASPNET account doesn't have permissions to your database.

You can either add the account as a user, or create a specific login and password for DNN then update the connection string.

bradds99...

It appears many newbies have this install problem.

Mitchel's reply covered one problem I have seen several times.

You may also consider this new connection string... it worked for me.

<

Note 'User Instance' is false and the database name is unique...

I hope this helps because this can be a difficult problem to solve. Everything from permissions to connection strings can shut your install down.

add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=False;Database=DotNetNuke437;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

I had attached the database and added ASPnet as a user and gave it permissions.  When that didn't work I used uid/pwd vs. trusted.  Still no go.  Only worked when I add Initial Catalog=InstanceDB to the connect string. This is on a Windows2000/AS machine.
