I started figuring out my problems by remotely attaching to the database and running a query:

select top 25 * from eventlog order by logcreatedate desc

This query shows the last 25 exceptions from the DNN "Log Viewer" (similar to going into Admin > Log Viewer in the interface, but since the interface is non-operational this appears to be the only way to see what the errors are).  Then, I go through the errors to see what the original problem is.  I found in many instances some DLLs are missing, or (in the case of upgrades), some DLLs are the wrong version (back dated) and are not compatible with other assemblies in the package.  This could be due to a DLL being unable to overrite an existing one during upgrade, or that it is simply missing in the 4.4.1 upgrade/install package.

It is unfortunate that in the event of a critical error DNN cannot simply spit out the complete error/stack trace on the screen.  The application could just read the Web.Config, and see if the owner wants the CustomErrorMessages to "RemoteOnly" or "Off".  If the CustomErrorMessages is set to "Off", then just go ahead and show us the error so we can quickly troubleshoot the problem.

I found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I went through the web.config file line by line.

When I originally set up my install of DNN I remember having problems, so I changed something in there that really no one talks about, but it is obviously used for the encrytion/decryption of the user accounts.

This line in the web.config file:
<add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider" connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer" enablePasswordRetrieval="true" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false" minRequiredPasswordLength="7" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0" requiresUniqueEmail="false" passwordFormat="Encrypted" applicationName="DotNetNuke" description="Stores and retrieves membership data from the local Microsoft SQL Server database"/>

I changed the "applicationName" value to the name of my LIVE server, thinking that would fix the problem that I had in the original install.  That did it.  When I changed that in the web.config file, I can now log in with the existing accounts.

Most people probably didn't change this value, which is why it isn't mentioned, but hopefully my dumb mistake helps someone else :-)

Thanks!

This really should be highlighted more than I think it has. Had the exact same problem and Wolverines solution was the key to making it work. Perhaps even mentioned in the installation manual (bummer if it already was :D).
