I just had a user complain about the exact same thing.   It's definitely not allowing hyphens.

Hi Jason,

I addressed it in the support forum and it was already reported in February as a problem -- only in 4.1.x -- and has been addressed in 4.5.0, although through optional configuration of the regular expression -- a feature taken out in 4.1.x and put back in for 4.5.0 -- but not for the default configuration as far as I could tell from the posts.  We'll have to see once it ships.

just to confirm:

  • the default validating regex has been enhanced to also allow hyphens in mail addresses
  • you can now change the default regex to be anything you like it to be
