I figured it out; I was storing the files within DNN and then pointing to them. I found out that if you store them somewhere else on the web server, they will open like one would expect. So, store the file somewhere else. Then, point to it using its URL.

I'm having this same trouble, infact when I click the document title I get the "open/save dialog and when I click open it appears that Windows takes over and does a lookup in it's mime database and actually launches an independant instance of Adobe Acrobat Reader (rather than the Adobe Acrobat browser plugin).

Furthermore I don't like the resolution that EScout209 came up with as I have resource folders for every page in my portal to house images/documents and user roles that have permission to upload pdf to those resource folders.  By referencing pdfs that live somewhere other than under the portal root, I demolish the function of my user roles.

Does anyone else have a better solution?

If you are using a DNN version before version 4.4, try upgrading.  The later versions contain changes to improve support for PDFs, which had a unique set of problems when the core transitioned to use the new "linkclick" handler.
