Ok, I've looked all over for this so either it's not been brought up before or I'm just blind but I have a question about setting up a demo site. I'm setting it up so that people can view a bunch of modules. The problem is, some modules I have require the user to actually be logged in to view things. I don't want to bother people with registering just to view a demo. The demo site, is a single dnn install and locked down like crazy and I've backed it up so I really don't care if it gets messed with. I just want to give people the ability to see the modules. I created a user account and right now I just have a text\html mod to tell the users to loggin with the users name and password. I'd rather not put the user name and password right out there. So long story short, can I just give users a link which includes the username and password for the user account so it logs them in automatically. If I add the string

?username=user&password=password

to the loggin link it auto fills the username field but not the password field and also doesn't doesn't just log them in an take me back to the refering page. Is there a way to do this? Does anyone have any ideas. Is there a module that has a login button where you can specify the username and password in the settings page?

Funny... I just posted an example about how you "might" do this a little earlier.  Modules that do this don't necessarily exist, per se, though I did see a "developer" one for 3.0 a while back (http://dnn.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=1501).  I have no idea how this one functions though, but it might do what you need... might not.

I'm not certain if you are a developer or not, but if so, check out the code I posted on this thread:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/108/threadid/121069/scope/posts/Default.aspx

I just had somebody email me this morning asking me to custom write one too, but I just don't have time to do it right now, otherwise I'd do so and get it out on the net since it seems to be a popular request.

I'm only a beginner in programming and I'm not good at vb at all. If it were C# I might be able to muddle it. I checked out the dnn3 autologin module. Just for giggles I tried it on a 4.4.1 portal but as I pretty much knew witha ll the changes to the membership modules there wasn't really going to be any joy. The fact that It actually was able to make a list of user was very surprising. Also sadning. It would only work well as a developers user switcher and not an autologin. If you eventually get the time to build a module for this I have a couple different version ideas for you. It just depends on how much work you'd want to do.

It would be a module that works like the links module. You could even start with the source for that module. Then instead of add a link, where the user specifies a display name and link, you let the user select the user from a drop down list. This method would keep accounts more secure because the usernames and passwords wouldn't be getting stored without encryption. A second method would be to ask for display name, username and password.  Either way, an additionally nice thing would be to add a check box at the end of that for "autorun". This meaning, that if the user is not logged in at all it logs them in automatically to that ID without having to click the display name in the interface. (don't make it so that users would be logged out and then back in as that user, that would cause some very unexpected issues)

This way you can use the module as both a user switching tool and as an autologin. Autologin made easy by  adding the module to a page and saying only unauthenticated users can view it. This way visitors become logged in automatically but then don't see the module or links once it performs it's task.

Ok so here's the deal.  I *am* going to write a module to do this because it seems there is some demand there.  I'm going to take my active directory auto-logon and modify it to support something like what you are asking for as well as a couple other people that I've seen make similar requests.  It'll allow you to pick the mode for each instance of the module that way you could potentially use several different login modes on the same website, depending on what you are trying to accomplish.  I'm not entirely certain when I'll get this module finished, but if you want to email me directly (just go to my website and send me a mail from the feedback form) I'll let you know when it is ready.  I imagine in the next month or two based on my current work load.

If you come up with any other ideas for it, just pass them along.
