(I don't know about the bumper sticker, but I would certainly wear a T-shirt with that slogan.)

That said, if you really want to do away with tables, at least for the general col/row layouts, there are quite a few sites that can help you build fluid CSS layouts. I have played around with most of the popular ones and in my opinion the Yahoo UI Grids CSS offers the most flexible (literally), easy to implement and broadest browser support. Check it out -- it's a time-saver.

That Yahoo stuff is really good.  You can bet they have refined whatever they are offering to meet what anyone should consider best practice.

As for alignment.  Use CSS to do that.  text-align: [left | center | right | justify ], or vertical-align: [ top | middle | bottom | baseline | sub | super | text-top | text-bottom | length ]
