Hi

I'm looking to implement the following functionality. Does anybody have any tips?

When somebody types in a URL and submits, DNN/ASP.NET goes and crawls the URL and takes a GIF (or like image format) snapshot to be stored in the database for later retrieval. Much like you get in IE7/quick tabs.

Does anybody know if this is at all possible?

Anybody know any modules that do it?

Otherwise I guess it's time to bring out visual studio. Anybody seen any demo code or has done this in the past?

Cheers!

Alex

I did a quick search on google and snowcovered and didn't see any modules out there that will do it.

I also did a quickl look for sample code and that also turned up blank...

If you were developing a Windows form application, you could use the WebBrower (.NET 2.0 version) control which exposes a DrawToBitmap method. Unfortunately, I don't believe that you could even instantiate the WebBrowser class (which is really a wrapper around an ActiveX control) in an ASP.NET project. It also requires a full trust environment. Unfortunately, I don't have any other suggestions as every other approach that I've come across uses the IE browser for its rendering.

www.Snap.com does this already and you can add the functionality to your site without any coding. Granted, it does it for every link you place.

Lots of PC programs available to do the task...  You could use scheduler and set up a job using: http://www.mewsoft.com/Products/SnapshotterPro.html upload the results.  (Command line version Snapshotter)

I don't know of any DNN modules that are able to do this task.

If you are interested in a free 3rd party hosted service take a look at snap.com.  Saves Bandwidth too!
