Hi Ed

Read with interest.  I did not know about the rendering engines in FF.  Thanks for that.

I was never looking to advocate the use of any particular dev add-ons with this post - simply to let some know of the new version.

I agree with you about IE and its standards.  From my point of view I test from 6 onwards and do the same as you on Macs.

I meant to say IE x and not IE 7.  My sites browser usage is similar to yours.  The user number gaps are large though.

I am certainly not trying to sell any browser to anyone.

Re Browser updates: you are probably right but many people have never even heard of FF so the propensity for FF users to update is simply that they are better informed and more "web-aware" than the average PC user who does not really care.

BTW: As Safari has big problems with the FCK editor do you advise mac people to use FF ?

Ian,

This is good conversation and I agree with you, I am not selling any particular tool or browser either. Just trying to be informative, as you are, as to what's out there and how it compares.

I agree with you 100% on the browser updates, FF users are much better informed when an update is available. With IE, it relies on the Windows Update feature and many users don't have the automatic updates turned-on.

We went through quite a few different HTML editors before settling upon one. We even tried FCK and had issues on the MAC platform with it as well. We ended up sticking with the HTML editor from Telerik and have been pretty pleased with its cross-platform functionality.

That's not to say that we didn't have some minor issues along the way, but they were issues that we were either able to solve or ones that Telerik addressed once notified and confirmed by them.

With that said, our only suggestions to users of our custom portal framework are advised that the only supported browsers for the MAC are FF and Safari.

What we've done is to set a base (in the DB) of what the browsers and versions are that we support. From there, schools are allowed to select (in there settings) which of those browsers they want users to be able to use. If a user comes into the portal using a browser that is not supported, they get a nicely formatted page with the supported browsers listed and links to download them.

I would go even further and suggest that this type of functionality should be in the core of DNN and accessed through Site Settings.

Ian,

I actually have to correct myself here. After going over it again, when you're in an IE Tab in FF, even though the tools appear, they actually do not work unless you switch back to a FF tab.

My bad...

Hi Ed

Agreed, a good conversation and one that has helped me a lot.  You mentioned the Telerick editor - I must look into this as I have a site for a senior Yacht club and half the committee have Macs (sigh).

It sounds as if you have this all covered very well. I really like the idea of allowing users to select supported browsers.
Maybe this is a module idea for someone?

In your environment I can see why you need to have all the user bases covered.

Of course if browser vendors and coders used the same DOM all our lives would be a little easier.

Changeing the subject a little I have to admit that I do dislike FF as it seems impossible to get it to play any WMV content and I think that this sort of thing is anti-consumer.  Its like IE blocking embedded QT which of course it does not.
I use video quite a lot and FF forces me to use FLV video when I have to make something cross platform.
My users cannot easily encode it from DV and so the whole work flow has to route through me.  Grr.

One could argue that the planet only needs one web browser ?

Precisely! and then Firefox came along and stuffed things up again.
