I am going to lead this with what I think is going on, so if not we can relook at this.  I think, for whatever reason, your starter kit install failed.  Here is how you get rid of the files that the starter kit places.  One think to note here is I am not sure this is all of the files, but I am relatively sure it might be.  Within Visual Studio, select Tools then Options from the top bar.  This will bring up your configuation options.  In this window select the + next to project and solutions, then select general.  You should now be able to find where you templates are located.  There are files in both the Item Templates and Project Templates that are installed by the starter kit.  To get rid of the old ones, go to the directories for both the Item and Project Templates.  Within both those directories double click on the Visual Web Developer directory, then visual basic.  For project Templates you will need to delete the Zip for Dot Net Nuke.  I had two, if you delete all of them it will take out all starter kits that have been installed.  In the Item Template folder you repeat the same folder clicks but delete, Module_VB.zip and Skin.zip.  Also in the Item Template folder you will need to click on Visual Web Developer then on CSharp.  You will need to delete Module_CS.zip from this folder.  This removes all of the files that I think it puts on the computer with the starter kit.  It should give you a clean install and you should be able to rerun the starter kit and be good to go.  Also, if you use the IDE for module development and want to modify your modules to have your company name in it you can modify these zips to reflect that.  Hope this helps and I will check back to see periodically.

Hey nightsoul - sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I have been on travel. I just checked your post, and thought that I would give it another try. I tried this once before but decided to follow your directions too. I still don't see DotNetNuke as a project template in either the starterkit or the web projects when creating a new project. As a matter of a fact, I don't actually see any of the projects that the starter kit installs. The install does show that everything was successful, but I don't see the VB Compiled Module, VB Dynamic Module, C# Dynamic Module, or the DotNetNuke Web Application Framework templates.

So I repeated the deletion and install process again, this time deleting the ContentInstallerHistory.xml and then on to the cached items and deleted them too. Then I reisntalled everything again. Still No love!

Thanks for your help. Do you have any other idea's?

Cheers!

There is definately something wrong with the 4.5.1 starterkit. I just installed the 4.4.1 starterkit and the everything installed fine. I then decided to install the 4.5.1 starterkit - overwriting the 4.4.1 starterkit - and DotNetNuke Web Application Framework disappeared!!

I think the Core team may want to take a look at this.

Cheers!

To fix the problem with the starter kit you can download the .msi file.  Sometimes this comes in as a .msi, or sometimes as a.zip file.  If it is .zip this is perfect because you won't have to change the ending.  Unzip it and inside you will see all of the files it is supposed to install on your computer.  Take the individual zip files and drop them into the correct location.  I have been working with developing custom templates at work and I am relatively certain that this is all the .msi file does.  For the project template the zip is DotNetNuke.zip and drop it in the Visual Web Developer\VisualBasic folder.  The item templates go into the same folders correct folders only in the Item Template directory.  There should be one each for CSharp and VisualBasic.  Then all you should have to do is start Visual Studio and you should see the correct items in the correct place.  If this still doesn't add the project in then what you can do is take the DotNetNuke.zip file and upzip it (really doesn't matter which zip file).  Inside the file there should be a file titled DotNetNuke.vstemplate.  If that file is missing then that explains the problem.  If the file is there then it may be a matter of something is wrong within the template file.

The starter kit has worked for me this time around and I 4.5.1 installed on my machine.  I quit using them a while back because the earlier ones typically only ran once or twice for me before they lost the database, or the install or some other problem.  Once that happened I would have to zip everything reinstall and then reupload everything, so I started using the Install download and loading it in to Visual Studio, it was more stable and allowed me to create modules and skins within the ide.  As of 4.5.1 I have reverted to the starter kit and then current installation I have has been running continuosly for a long time so I doubt it is the starter kit.  It could be though but this sounds like a problem with Visual Studio rather then DNN.  The other question I hadn't thought to ask is are you running Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2005 "Orcas" that may make a huge difference in why the install won't work. I am running Visual Studio 2005 without any problems.

First let me thank you for your comments nightsoul. I have been grappling with this issue for a while. I am using the Visual Studio 2005 Professional. My IT department did reinstall the OS and all my stuff on my system not that long ago. When my IT department  did this they misnamed my machine, they then corrected my machine name after I installed Visual Studio, SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition, and all my tools and utilities (Red-Gate Professional Toolbelt, SourceGear Vault, and so on).

Before this, everything worked fine up to 4.4.1 (which still works for me). I did use Vaults diff tool to look at the different vstemplate files included in the DotNetNuke.zip file and noticed that the reference to the DotNetNuke.webproj file - while included in the zip - was not in the vstemplate itself; whereas it is contained in the 4.4.1 DotNetNuke.vstemplate file.

So I changed the vstemplate file to include the DotNetNuke.webproj file and inserted it into the DotNetNuke.zip file, uninstalled everything, and reinstalled the templates using the DotNetNuke.vsi installer. But no love. The DotNetNuke Web Application Framework and all the other templates do not show up in Visual Studio.

Why would the 4.4.1 installer work and the 4.5.1 installer not work if it had something to do with my installation of Visual Studio?

Finally, I installed the 4.4.1 starterkit and checked VS. The DotNetNuke Web Application Framework shows up fine. I tehn copied the DotNetNuke.zip file from the 4.5.1 starterkit into the ProjectTemplates/VisualBasic folder and checked VS again. The DotNetNuke Web Application Framework entry disappeared! This definately has something to do with the DotNetNuke.zip file.

Whe million dollar question is what.

Cheers!
